How Schools Can Raise Environmentally Responsible Kids
Our environment is in a bad phase. Forests are being destroyed, animals are sneaking towards extinction and global warming is at peak. It's not a pretty image; therefore it's important that schools in Gujarat, Mumbai and other parts of the world take the initiative to raise environmentally responsible kids. The change might not happen overnight; however, it can make a difference in the future of the planet.
Here we give some more simple ways how various schools can strive to raise kids who care about this planet:
Allow Kids to Experience Nature
As educationalist all schools in Gujarat, Mumbai etc should give kids a primary nature experience that will instil them with an environmental ethic. Because one inspiring experience in nature is worth the effort. Studies show that kids who have an immersive experience in nature at an early age, foster a deep love for the environment that they carry with them their entire lives.
Teach Kids about Recycling
Educators can do some research online and show kids where garbage goes and how recycling works. This will give kids a better understanding of what happens to the things they throw away and the things they put in the recycling bin.
Moreover, by being engaged in recycling tasks children will be able to learn the difference between biodegradable and recyclable trash.
Teach Kids to Preserve Resources
Schools should inform children that conserving resources such as water and energy is important. Educators can help them build a cistern or a rainwater collection system so that rainfall water can be captured and reused during droughts or for watering the garden and indoor plants. This task can be a game for kids to monitor how fast the water accumulates.
Organise Plantation Drive in School
Schools can conduct a plantation drive where children are taken into the school ground and made to plant trees. This activity can turn out to be a picnic for children.
There is hardly any awareness on the tree plantation drives at the grass root level and by such initiatives, the school can teach a good ethic that can be spread across various strata of the society.
Promote Kids To Choose Environment As A Career
The schools should also counsel children as to how they can choose environment as a career and be environmentalists. By taking environment preservation as a career, a student can be encouraged to join an NGO and various other global organizations like United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), World Nature Organisation (WNO), and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
There are many CBSE schools in Bhavnagar, Gujarat and other parts of Mumbai, however many of them fail to educate children as to what they can do to preserve the environment and what lifestyle changes can be adopted in order to conserve nature. The entire curriculum of CBSE, to which a majority of schools in India are affiliated, has very few chapters on the environment - that only teaches kids how the environment is made of and the various terms related to it. However, this is not enough to preserve the environment. Instead, schools should make children understand how they can become an asset to the environment by making careful lifestyle changes and conservation.
